Todd, Natasha and I have tried a couple of times to go hunting in this stuff and have found it darn near impossible to get around. So we ordered ourselves some snow shoes. Wow, it is amazing what these things will do for you. Drifts that I was falling to my thighs and butt through, I can now walk on top of. We even went for a walk to feed the pheasants (yes, we are feeding them!) and check the water tank for the horses down at Dad Bettin's yesterday. The horses looked so pretty against the snow and the sky. I guess this stuff isn't all bad.
Well, Janine and Sarah have posted about all the snow that they received and have put some great pics up. I decided that you needed to see a couple from my house too. This is the fence to our horse pasture. The girls decided to have some fun on the hills that the drifts made. The trees you can see in the back of them are over 10 ft tall! And what would a winter be without at least one snow angel?
Katelyn got a new miniature farm set from Santa. She has really enjoyed spending hours setting it up and playing with it. She is constantly arranging and rearranging the fences, the horses, the stalls, the people, etc. Rascal decided that he needed to join in her fun and become her barn cat. Only problem.....he forgot to ask!
Due to the snow storm, we had to cancel most of our typical Christmas happenings. No church either last night or this morning, no Christmas with my family, and we stayed home most of the day. This was a pic I took Wednesday morning before the snow hit. Last night we did make it down to Todd's parents for Christmas Eve. It was just the 6 of us, but we enjoyed opening gifts and eating lots of food. It was nice to be together for some family time. The girls got a Wii from us and many gifts from grandma & grandpa that they have enjoyed. Santa was also able to make it through the storm to get to our house. I think Todd likes the Wii as much as the girls. They took some time to relax today and so did Rascal. We were without power for all of the night of the 23rd/24th with the power coming back on at noon on Christmas Eve. We did loose it again for a couple hours this afternoon.
Todd managed to do something he's been trying to do this whole year since he bought his truck. It took a 4 ft tall X 40 ft long snow drift for him to get his truck stuck. Then he had to walk down to his dad's and get the snow blower. Todd and I decided to venture out this evening and go hunting for awhile. We walked for a little over a mile in thigh deep snow. Sometimes you could walk on top, but then you would fall in and that was about the time it would come up to your butt. We decide that we need snow shoes. :)
Last Monday, Tasha's band concert was postponed due to the weather. Instead of trying to set a second date for another concert, they decided to have it after the vocal concert that was scheduled for last night. The vocal portion started at 7:00 and the kids did a really nice job. However, we never got to the band part of the concert. Shortly after Tasha and I arrived at the auditorium, it started to rain. Mom and Dad, Linda, and Todd and Katie all drove to the school in freezing rain. It continued to rain throughout most of the choir part. The school (with prompting from the local and county police) decided it was too dangerous to wait and sent everyone home. There was about an 1/8 of an inch of ice on everything when we came out. The kids were disappointed, as was the director, but now they can prepare for and look forward to a winter concert instead. This is what all the windows looked like on the vehicles at the concert. Todd said it looked like we installed frosted glass in our entryway.
Katelyn got her first rabbit today! It was the world's smartest rabbit. It took an hour for them (dad and Katie) to finally get a shot at him. One shot in the head at 50 yards.
Katelyn's Christmas concert was postponed due to the winter storm that hit us on the 8th. On 15th we crowded into the small gym in the Elementary and listened to the BK-4th grades sign songs about Christmas. It was cute, but the gym was hot. And as Todd so nicely states, "Those #### ***** bleachers kill my back!" Katelyn knew the songs real well and did such a nice job.
This last weekend Dan, Mary, Eli and Sarah came to our house for another weekend of hunting. We went hunting on Saturday and got 8 pheasants. Then on Sunday we got 4 more. It was cold, but it was great hunting. I even got a solo kill on Saturday. I think Todd was more excited than I was. What a great time and I look forward to deer season now. Picture of me with Dan's dog, Chester, my new gun, and the pheasant.
